Missouri Department of Natural Resources
Scott Joplin House State Historic Site
2658 Delmar Blvd.
St. Louis, MO 63103
314/340-5790
"From Morning to Night: Domestic Service in the Gilded Age South," developed by Maymont Foundation, tells the story of a predominantly African-American labor corps -- barely a generation removed from slavery -- that worked primarily in white households as cooks, maids, laundresses, nursemaids, butlers and chauffeurs. Often hidden from view, and largely hidden from history, their labor made their employers' lifestyles appear effortless. With nearly 70 photographs and illustrations, interpretive text and numerous period quotations, the exhibition reveals the daily rhythms of service as well as its broader context in the turbulent Jim Crow South. The exhibition's focus on everyday interactions between black and white Southerners gives visitors an intimate view of this pivotal period in American history.

Steamboats were great technological advancements that made the Mississippi Valley prosperous, but passengers and merchants risked fires, explosions, sinking, epidemic
disease, and other disasters. Tens of thousands of immigrants, business men, and pleasure seekers rode the steamboats. Most trips were safe, but disasters were real and often terrible. Hundreds of steamboats ran aground, burned, blew up, and sank. In the early years steamboats were engineering experiments and the rivers were full of danger and delay. |

This is where the Clean Water Challenge racers will report the results of their water quality monitoring and where you can get up to date information from the leader boards. Meet the racers and get an up-close look at what it takes to be a competitive paddler. Between the live bands, the hands-on art and environmental activities and the educational displays the festival will be a great place to hang out and wait for the racers to cross the flying finish line at the park.
Serious canoeists and kayakers will be in a stiff competition to complete 61 beautiful miles along the Missouri River. The race starts in Washington, Missouri with a break at the Race for the Rivers Festival in Frontier Park. The second day will be a sprint to Columbia Bottoms at the Confluence.
